Oh, I guess he still has gold shoulderpads…which aren’t attached to anything, they’re just sitting on his shoulders. All of his cool, fancy gold armor got stripped away and replaced with a vest and a torn skirt. That looks like an April Fool’s Day joke. …and that was probably the stupidest of all Koei’s redesigns. All I do know is that he went from looking like this…

I suspect that it is, but since I didn’t bother playing as Ma Chao in that game, I can’t say for sure. Now, I’ll admit here, that I don’t know if DW6 was responsible for what happened. All he wanted was Cao Cao’s head on the end of his spear, and he teamed up with Cao Cao’s greatest enemy to get it. Restoring the Han, bringing peace to the land…he didn’t care about any of that. That was his whole motivation, and it made him different and a darker than his teammates. I also found him enjoyable as a character. And when you were like me and wanted to run through the Shu stages as fast as possible just to get them over with, having a powerful character who never even had to get off of his horse was a godsend. This has become pretty standard in Koei games now, but back in the day, it made him broken as shit. He also had a nice area attack while mounted, which was another thing that other characters didn’t have. And the speed of these attacks meant that you could trap enemy officers in them and just whale on them until they died. He only attacked on one side of his horse, which meant that he could focus his mounted attacks on one officer, or a group of them, which let him utterly destroy his enemies from horseback. And on a horse, he was vastly superior to every other officer in the game.

His moveset was unique and elaborate and very, very fun. He was cool! His armor was really fancy and shiny and neat. This might surprise you, but there was actually a time when Ma Chao was my favorite Shu character (except Pang Tong, but it’s not fair to compare people to Pang Tong). And his DW version is a disaster as well. TL DR: One of the true monsters of his age.
